3 tips to make your small business unforgettable

There are plenty of ways in life to become unforgettable; not all of them are good, mind you. You could invent something spectacular. You could be the world’s most generous humanitarian. You might even make a world-changing scientific discovery. You could do that, or you could save some time and effort and have a few too many cocktails at the work party.

Hey, we’re not going to tell you how to live your life. Although, for your marketing, we do have some wisdom to share to make sure your audience never forgets who you are.

Walk the walk

Your marketing should highlight the best parts of your business to your target audience. But there’s no point in making a whole song and dance about how your products and services can change their lives only for them to find out it doesn’t live up to the promise.

Effective marketing is about being true to what makes your business special and relaying that in the best way. However, your investments in a marketing plan and content will probably be undermined if past customers leave unsatisfied. Many have hypothesised the customer experience could overtake price and product as the key brand differentiator. That’s how important it is to make sure your customers get what you promise.

The impact of word of mouth is huge, and anyone can post anything on the internet and people will listen. All it can take sometimes is one viral post to cause problems for your brand and for you to fade out of the spotlight. So, make sure if you’re going to talk the talk, you can walk the walk.

Be original

You probably saw this one coming and you might hear it a lot. But the reason marketers keep telling their clients that originality is key is because so many businesses aren’t. Instead, they often follow the mindset of, “our competitors are doing this, we need to start doing that to keep up”. But no one likes a copycat.

The idea of competition is to set yourself apart using your best attributes. Even in sport, if your competitors are stronger, faster, or bigger than you, the only way to win is with a better strategy. Your biggest competitor’s strategy, which will often rely on the pure strength of their brand, won’t work for you. You need to come up with new ways to show you’re the best in the game, or risk looking like a knock-off.

Be brave

The road to success is paved with failure. Just because it’s a cliché doesn’t mean it’s not true. As a small business ourselves, we at Coster Content know how hard it is to take risks with a business you’ve worked so hard on. You’re scared that anything that can go wrong will go wrong.

In marketing, things go wrong all the time. People run insensitive campaigns, miss their audience by miles, or simply produce boring content. You could lose money. But the goal isn’t to avoid taking risks with your marketing. It’s to take risks while minimising the chances of things going awry.

This means hiring a professional team who understands the industry as opposed to winging it at 3 am on a Wednesday morning. It means doing your research to understand your audience and making your products as brilliant as they can be. When you do this, yes things can go wrong, but they’re much more likely to go right, helping you create one memorable marketing campaign. The payoff will be incredible.

As a small business, it can be hard to stand out in a saturated market. But it’s not impossible with the right tools and team behind you.
